This is the journal of an extraordinary journey. Extraordinary, not because its travellers broke any world records, pushed the endurance of the human species out to new limits or even added new countries to the map. It is extraordinary simply because it was a voyage of personal discovery; of seeing how much fun can be had being a stranger in a foreign town, of sleeping rough and meeting people in ageing trains, of waking in the cold light of dawn to a new place and showering in station toilets, of spending non-existent money without concern and of feeling free to be yourself wherever you go.
This is the story of two young Cantab-types who decided a long time ago that vacations were not made sixteen weeks long so they could slog their guts out on a production line or make the tea on work experience or mow their Granny’s lawn. The vacation should be used to expand the horizons, to free the mind and maybe even have quite a good time. From the icy Baltic coast to the golden Mediterranean islands, from the rich and greedy West to the poverty stricken East, they set off to meet people, to get to know each other, to spend student loans without proper regard for finance and just occasionally, to have a few laughs.
